She is the daughter of Nedar, and is also a friend of Hermia with whom she often compares herself. Prior to the play’s beginning, she is betrothed to the nobleman Demetrius but is jilted when his affections turn to Hermia. Despite this, Helena’s abiding love for Demetrius remains consistent throughout the play. Hermia and her suitor, Lysander , confide in Helena that they plan to elope. In the hopes that she will gain back some of his respect, Helena tells Demetrius of Hermia and Lysander’s plans and, the next night, they follow the escaping lovers into the forest.
Though Demetrius is deliberately cruel towards her, Helena remains intent in her devotion.

A highly-anticipated public performance of Shakespeare at Australia’s largest prison has been cancelled because security arrangements by contractor Serco were not organised in time. The prison staged several performances of the show in December for visitors and fellow inmates , with the success of those prompting the Fringe venture.
But a spokesman for the contractor confirmed the performance had been cancelled, citing insufficient planning time. Inmates taking part in the show are part of a performing arts program which helps them with self-confidence, English language skills and job interview techniques. Tickets had already gone on sale for the three-day showing, with audience members warned they may have to undergo full body searches and have their phones and other personal possessions confiscated as they entered the venue.
The prison would also likely have been in complete lockdown while audiences were escorted to the performance area in a large warehouse, filmed by surveillance cameras.

For all the efforts the mechanicals have engaged in the project, their rendition of the lion is such a failure that it has the on-stage spectators roar with laughter. This paper aims to explore the strategies—whether rooted in the Elizabethan worldview, or amazingly modern—through which Shakespeare stages this inward confrontation, while involving us in vertiginous reflexions on the theatre. Quince the carpenter, Bottom the weaver, Flute the bellows-mender, Snout the tinker, Snug the joiner and Starveling the tailor, are indeed confronted with the problem of staging the lion which, after attacking Thisbe, leaves her blood-stained tunic on the ground, leading Pyramus to wrongly believe that his beloved is dead, and to take his own life.

People 8 comments. You might have heard that celebrating Midsummer is a huge thing in the Nordic countries. Like the name suggests, Midsummer is the public holiday which celebrates summer and light. During the Midsummer week, Finland enjoys the longest daylight hours of the year. The importance of Midsummer is very close to Christmas, which wins the prize of the biggest national holiday only by a nose.
Similar to Christmas, the biggest day of Midsummer is actually the eve, not the day. Midsummer Eve is always a Friday. Follow me on Instagram and add more Finland to your life instantly! Midsummer was a pagan summer festival to celebrate good harvest and fertility. It was a party initially held to honor Ukko, the king of the gods in Finnish mythology.
Ukko just like Zeus in Greek mythology was the god of thunder and rain. If people made him happy by celebrating, it meant a good harvest. When Christianity arrived in Finland, most pagan traditions were not banned but cleverly associated with Christian celebrations.
